Vance says West Bank annex bid won’t fly
US Vice President JD Vance stated on Thursday that President Donald Trump opposes Israeli annexation of the occupied West Bank and suggested recent legislative action appeared to be a foolish political maneuver. Israeli lawmakers advanced preliminary legislation on Wednesday that would apply domestic law to the contested territory. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned such measures could threaten the fragile Gaza ceasefire that Trump brokered. The bill passed its first reading with support from far-right ministers but faces three additional votes before becoming law.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu labeled the vote a deliberate provocation intended to create division as American officials visited Israel. His Likud party declined to support the measure and said passage remains unlikely without broader coalition backing. Trump administration representatives traveled to the region this week to reinforce the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that began on Oct. 10. Saudi Arabia and 14 other Muslim nations condemned the legislative proposal that would affect the land Palestinians seek for statehood.
