Weaving contest heats up at Yangon pagodas

Three major pagodas in Yangon hosted traditional robe-weaving contests on Monday ahead of the Tazaungmone full moon festival, continuing a cultural tradition aimed at preserving Myanmar heritage.

Shwedagon Pagoda held its 37th annual competition with nine participating looms. The southwest corner of the grounds hosted the 5 p.m. ceremony. Winners will receive prizes ranging from 1.5 million to 4 million kyat, plus trophies. Meanwhile, Botahtaung Pagoda staged its 41st competition with 24 looms competing for prizes between 400,000 and 1.5 million kyat. The event also began at 5 p.m.

Thiri Mingala Kaba Aye Pagoda organized its 25th contest with seven looms. Prize money spans from 500,000 to 1 million kyat, with certificates and trophies for winners. All three competitions follow the same format, where participants race to complete ceremonial robes overnight. These finished garments will be presented to their respective pagodas during the Tazaungmone full moon day celebration. The contests preserve the Matho Thingan tradition, where devotees weave robes through the night as religious offerings.
