Zaliha launches policy to repurpose heritage buildings in Kuala Lumpur

Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Federal Territories, unveiled the Federal Territories Building Repurposing and Adaptive Reuse Policy (RE_NEW) today, alongside the Kuala Lumpur Building Repurposing Guidelines. The new policy aims to breathe life into heritage buildings, reduce carbon emissions, and preserve the city’s unique identity.

Dr Zaliha emphasized that if a building is structurally sound, holds heritage value, and offers economic potential, repurposing it is the smarter choice over demolition. The policy, launched at Rumah Hijau in Perdana Botanical Gardens, also offers incentives like reduced development charges, fast-track approvals, and green matching grants for developers and SMEs.

She shared that this initiative draws inspiration from her visit to Italy, where the Federal Territory was recognized for pioneering the Baukultur concept outside Europe.
