Zimbabwe orders local authorities to curb spending with strict cost measures
The Zimbabwean government has instructed all 92 local authorities to implement cost containment measures to curb unnecessary spending and enhance accountability. The directive, issued by Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe, includes suspending all council workshops except those related to strategic planning and budget processes.
Foreign travel is restricted to trips fully funded by the host institution, with officials required to submit detailed post-mission reports within seven days. The use of pool vehicles is also tightly regulated to prevent unauthorized or non-essential usage.
Minister Garwe emphasized that local authorities’ primary responsibility is to provide essential services to residents, with performance assessments now based on Minimum Service Delivery Standards, which will guide future evaluations. This move aims to eliminate waste and focus resources on vital services such as water supply, waste management, and road infrastructure.
