Zimbabwe sets 10-year sugarcane strategy to boost output to 1 million tonnes

Zimbabwe is developing a 10-year Sugarcane Industry Development Strategy with a goal to increase national sugar output to nearly one million tonnes by 2035. This strategy aligns with the National Development Strategy 1 and 2 and supports Vision 2030, aiming to make Zimbabwe an empowered upper-middle-income economy.

The strategy is being crafted by the Ministries of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, and Industry and Commerce. It focuses on addressing challenges in the sugarcane farming industry and unlocking its full potential.

Key targets include increasing average sugarcane output per hectare in Chiredzi and Chisumbanje from 81 to 105 tonnes by 2035. Currently, Triangle and Hippo Valley Estates produce 57% of the country’s sugarcane, with out-growers contributing significantly. Additionally, plans are in place to expand sugarcane for ethanol production by 10,000 hectares by 2035.
