Zimbabwe rolls out 1,172 Village Business Units to fight food insecurity
The establishment of 1,172 Village Business Units (VBUs) across Zimbabwe is making a significant impact on food security and rural livelihoods. With 604 completed and 553 ongoing, these initiatives enhance nutrition, provide jobs, and boost local economies. Unlike traditional farming, VBUs are comprehensive business models that empower families and foster community spirit.
A critical component of the VBU initiative is access to water, provided by over 50,000 boreholes drilled nationwide. This infrastructure enables communities to grow various crops, enhancing food security and providing income. Many locals are selling their produce, improving their financial situations.
Additionally, School Business Units (SBUs) help schools generate income, reducing reliance on fees. The VBU program is part of the broader Rural Development 8.0 initiative, aligning with Vision 2030 to uplift rural communities and drive industrialisation. These efforts are transforming lives, as seen in communities like those in Manicaland.
